2024 marked 60 years since crews driving the 21st-series Volga first lined up for the start of the Monte Carlo Rally, back in 1964
The Volgas competed against the Swedish Volvo Amazon and Saab 96, the German Mercedes-Benz 300 SE, the French Renault and Simca, and the Italian Fiat 600. The odds were clearly uneven. The rivals’ cars were light, powerful, sharp-handling, and some already had disc brakes. Even so, many of them retired from this brutal rally without ever seeing the finish line. But the Russian crews overcame every difficulty. They did not take the top places, but every crew reached the finish. They were awarded gold commemorative medals in the presence of Prince Albert and Princess Grace of Monaco.
