The Silver Arrows era, the legendary Tripoli race, and a crushing Mercedes one-two

For the 1939 Tripoli Grand Prix, Mercedes-Benz built a new car to the 1.5-liter class regulations in just 8 months, to compete with the Italian masters Alfa Romeo and Maserati.

On May 7, 1939, two W 165 cars took the start, driven by Hermann Lang and Rudolf Caracciola. The debut was stunning: a one-two finish (Hermann Lang crossed the line almost a full lap ahead of the field and his teammate) in Tripoli proved that the engineers had managed to build, in such a short time, one of the outstanding racing cars of their era.
